New York Bar Exam 2027: Dates, NYLE Deadlines, and NextGen Timing

Reviewed October 4, 2026. This guide highlights planning issues for examination applicants; it does not determine individual eligibility or replace the Board's current instructions.

If you plan to take the New York bar exam in 2027, prepare for the legacy UBE. New York's announced switch to NextGen begins in July 2028. Keep the separate New York Law Course and New York Law Exam on your calendar too, especially because the NYLE registration rules are changing for 2027.

Here are the dates and distinctions to check before building a study schedule or choosing another state's examination.

New York bar exam dates and application windows

The Board of Law Examiners' official calendar lists:

Put the application window on your calendar now. Add separate reminders for eligibility documentation, any accommodation request, and later exam instructions. Registering for a prep course does not register you for the examination.

Retakers should read the current BOLE notices before choosing a date. The Board provides a special application deadline for applicants who failed the immediately preceding New York examination: the later of the ordinary deadline or the seventh day after results are released. It also limits applicants with four or more unsuccessful New York attempts to applying for the February administration.

Those are specific rules, not a general extension for anyone who misses a filing window. Follow the notice and portal instructions applicable to your own application.

What the 2027 examination covers

New York's UBE FAQs describe a written day with two MPT tasks and six MEE essays, followed by the 200-question MBE day. New York's passing legacy UBE score is 266 on the 400-point scale. A question-bank percentage is not a direct conversion to that scaled total.

Build a preparation plan that includes all three components. A good week of multiple-choice practice can still leave an essay-writing or performance-task problem untested. Start written practice early enough to identify whether the difficulty is rule knowledge, issue selection, application, organization, or finishing on time.

For older essay materials, check NCBE's current MEE scope. Conflict of Laws, Family Law, Trusts and Estates, and Secured Transactions left the MEE in July 2026. Do not use that change to delete all performance tasks in those areas or assume it changes a separate New York law requirement.

The NYLE has its own calendar

The New York Law Course and New York Law Exam are separate from the UBE. The Board's examination guide describes the NYLE as a two-hour, 50-question, open-book examination administered remotely. You must finish the NYLC before applying for the NYLE.

For 2027 NYLE administrations, registration must occur at least 45 days before the exam. BOLE's September 2026 notice expressly preserves the previous deadlines for the December 2026 NYLE. Do not apply a generic 30-day reminder to the 2027 dates.

The published 2027 NYLE schedule is:

Work backward from the registration date to leave time to complete the course and review the current instructions. Keep the NYLE software and technical steps on the same checklist rather than treating the initial registration as the last task.

Accommodation deadlines are separate

The calendar lists earlier receipt deadlines for new NYLE accommodation applications. For the April 15, 2027 NYLE, it lists January 15, 2027. The amended Board rules also provide a 60-day deadline for a reapplication seeking the same previously approved accommodations, without additional or different accommodations.

Use the instructions for your request type. The ordinary NYLE registration deadline does not replace an accommodation deadline.

An early NextGen score will not transfer to New York

The New York NextGen announcement says New York will not accept a transferred NextGen score earned before the July 2028 administration.

That limitation concerns when the examination was taken. Waiting until 2028 to submit a score from a 2026 or 2027 NextGen examination does not change its administration date.

If you are considering another jurisdiction, compare both its exam format and New York's acceptance rules before committing. A legacy UBE score transfer remains subject to New York's score, timing, education, and other admission requirements. A jurisdiction appearing on a NextGen adoption chart does not establish that its current exam will produce a score New York accepts.

Passing the UBE is one part of admission

The official examination guide also addresses the MPRE, pro bono requirement, applicable skills-competency requirement, and character-and-fitness process. Keep these items separate from your UBE study progress. Applicants relying on foreign legal education should follow BOLE's specific eligibility-review instructions well before assuming the ordinary application window is their first deadline.

A practical checklist gives each requirement four fields: the official source, the deadline, what you must submit or complete, and the confirmation you have received. Mark unresolved eligibility questions as unresolved, even if the exam date is already in your study app.

Where BarReps fits

BarReps offers supplemental original MBE-style questions, MEE-style essays, flashcards, outlines, and progress tracking. It does not currently provide a dedicated NYLE, MPT, or NextGen course, and its questions are not NCBE-licensed questions.

Use the essay practice guide and MPT workflow to structure review, while obtaining the official New York materials and any additional instruction your plan needs.
